Searching the literature is a research method in its own right, using online databases in your defined area of study is a way of enabling to read research studies objectively, identifying the key terms, connecting with correct Boolean operators, and developing critical evaluation skills for useful and credible resources. The support by the use of hands on practical sessions and activities will reinforce your understanding of the research concept. The session will cover the following databases:

Additionally, in preparation for your literature review, you will need strategies for managing large quantities of reading material. In this session participants will learn to discern useful information by reading critically and take relevant notes for reference. At postgraduate level you will read beyond your area of interest. In developing your conceptual thinking for your study, you will need to expose yourself to lots of different and challenging thoughts and ideas. Throughout the program you will read lots of books and articles, and it will be useful to have some strategies for managing these large quantities of reading material.

Participants will learn how to add references manually, import references from databases and use Mendeley with Microsoft Word.
The use of Mendeley when referencing and citing of resources the use of “edit and manage citations” in MS Word becomes handy. Formats differ substantially in each discipline; students should select their formats and referencing style in consultation with their supervisor.
