Students at The University of the South Pacific Labasa Campus enjoyed an enriching programme of honoring the life of the Father of Modern Fiji – Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna at the Campus on the 25th of May, 2023.

With the theme of “Celebrating Visionary Leadership” and joining the USP Community in Fiji in celebrating the life of this statesman, scholar, solider and Chief there were exchanges of research presentations and video on the life of Ratu Sukuna. Accolades for this great visionary leader were showcased also at this event using poems, dances, exhibitions of cultural wear, information booths, demonstration of masi making and a live preparation of a light refreshment called “waite” at the Campus program today. Officer in charge Mr Ahemad Shah, reiterated the need to be a visionary leader as it entails one that is enriched with service, respecting people and valuing cultures and others in a diverse community. SLS staff Mrs Simmons, lamented how USP, as a regional institute, celebrates diversity – shown by people of different ethnicities participating in all our events. The celebration organized by our students & staff aims to shed more light on Ratu Sukuna and his achievement.

At USP, it has a rich diverse cultural community. Sharing’s and learnings of events such as this added value to student experience on campus allowing them to embrace their cultural identity, paying homage to those who paved the way before them and equipping them for the future. The Campus was fortunate to celebrate Eid, Girmit Day and Ratu Sukuna day this month ending the semester on a high note of shared learnings of values that is cultural and religious both of whom is special to us all.
