Expertise / Activities
Satalaka Petaia hails from the beautiful Island nation of Tuvalu. Satalaka is a Lecturer/Fellow with the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS), where he teaches Marine/Fisheries Management, Marine/Fisheries Policy, Fisheries Development, Marine Transport & Shipping, and Maritime Skills & Techniques. In addition to his teaching roles, Satalaka was recently appointed as Coordinator for the Marine Studies Discipline.
Prior to joining USP in 2005, he served as fishery personnel for many years, holding various positions with national and regional institutions, and the private sector. Satalaka has broad experience of national and regional fisheries management, development and training.
Educational Background/Qualifications
Satalaka is a fisheries development, management and training specialist. He obtained his PG Diploma in Fisheries Technology from the UK, Master in Applied Science (LMR) from AMC, Australia, and Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) from the University of the South Pacific.
Biography
Satalaka hails from the island of Nui in Tuvalu. He cherishes his simple, humble and christian upringing in the islands. He is ever grateful to almighty God for his guidance during his strive to overcome the many challenges of life. This upringing has made him what he is today. He is passionate about serving almighty God, family, village, island, and his beloved country (Tuvalu).
Research Interests
Satalaka is passionate about sustaining the marine environment and its different uses and benefits to humanity. His research interest focuses on the following areas:
- Sustainable fisheries development, management, training and policy.
- Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) approach and its application to marine resources use.
- Climate Change and fisheries.
- Fisheries and human impacts on marine resources and ecosystems.
- Tuna Fisheries of the Pacific Islands.
- Fisheries and Communities.
- Fish capture methods & technology (selectivity, design & impacts).
- Fisheries training and capacity building.
- Commercial and industrial fisheries development and management.
- Subsistence and artisanal fisheries development and management.
- Marine Transport.
He has conducted research and written articles, conference papers and chapters in books in most of the above-mentioned areas.
