Dr. Thomas Bauer

Biography

Thomas Bauer is an Associate Professor and Acting Head of The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management who recently joined The University of the South Pacific.

His academic qualifications include Bachelor of Business (Landshut University of Applied Sciences), Bachelor of Business in Tourism ( Munich University of Applied Sciences),  Masters of Business in Tourism Development ( Victoria University Melbourne) and  Doctor of Philosophy (Monash University).

He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London and a Fellow of THE-ICE, The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education. He has carried out audits of hotel and tourism schools in Austria, China, Dubai, Fiji, Holland, the Philippines, Switzerland and Thailand.

From 1989 to 1999 Thomas was lecturer, senior lecturer and Associate Professor in tourism at Victoria University in Melbourne and from 1999 to 2012 he was Assistant Professor of tourism in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Sustainable Tourism at Central Queensland University, and from 2015 to 2017 he was the Chairman of Mission Beach Business and Tourism.

He has travelled in 75 countries on all continents and has worked in Germany, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and now Fiji.

Research and Scholarly Interests

Since 1991 when he started his PhD research into commercial tourism and its impacts in Antarctica, Thomas has visited the region by ship 31 times. During his time aboard ship he has had he roles of researcher, naturalist, historian, photographer, videographer and Zodiac driver.

He continuous to go back to this remote part of the world to observe first-hand how tourism is handled there and he is pleased to observe Antarctica is the best managed tourism region in the world. In January 2018, he returned from 6 weeks aboard ship during which he had the opportunity to observe how Chinese tourists consume the Antarctic tourism product and how they are managed.

Consultancies

Thomas has consulted to the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, various provincial governments in the People’s Republic of China and has worked on UNWTO missions to Vietnam, Maldives and Korea.
