Welcome to the RPEIPP

Message from the PERF Board Transition Chair, Associate Professor Kabini Sanga

In 2001, a group of Pacific regional educators gathered at USP’s Laucala Campus in Suva for the colloquium on Re-thinking Pacific Education. Hosted by the USP Institute of Education and jointly organized by IOE and Victoria University of Wellington, this event was supported by New Zealand (under its NZODA, later NZAID) with a small grant. This 2001 conversation/talanoa/tok stori catapulted a Pacific-wide education and leadership reform movement, named the Re-thinking Pacific Education Initiative for and by Pacific Peoples (RPEIPP), thereby creating a vision, infusing cultures, catalyzing home-grown change, developing talent and forming strategic alignments across the region, communities and generations (and more).

Twenty years on, we’re seeing (and participating in) The Vaka Pasifiki Education Conference, a generation of Pacific Islands research students are citing research articles on indigenous knowledges and frameworks, a generation of emerging Pacific leaders and scholars are being mentored, a vibrant and expanding Leadership Pacific Cause Movement is advocating for attention on Pacific leadership, mentoring communities such as the Fellowship of Faithful Mentors (FFM) Solomon Islands are providing a strategic and creative capacity for country engagement in Education, and a generation of Pacific Thought leaders are working together and doing so confidently as Pacific Islanders.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the RPEIPP, you can expect a few celebratory and platform-setting programmes and activities from now till mid December 2021.

I invite you to join with us in these events to celebrate 20 years of the RPEIPP journey as well as to prepare our emerging Pacific Islands and Oceanic educators and leaders for the next season of this journey.

Thanks, and God bless,

Kabini Sanga,
PERF Board Transition Chair
& Victoria University of Wellington, Aotearoa NZ.
