To Review the Ranking of a Journal

To contest the rankings in USP2015, the review of classification will be based on the rankings derived from the assessment of three ranking sources: USP2015, SCOPUS-SJR Index (3-year Impact) and ISI Web of Knowledge -JCR Index (5-year Impact). The following method will be taken to conduct this review:

Step 1: Determine if the journal is in USP2015 listings and note ranking- A*, A, B, or C

Step 2: Search for the journal and determine its ranking in SJR Index (3-year Impact) by Subject area only. If there is more than one subject area then the average of all subject areas will used.

Step 3: Search for the journal and determine its ranking in JCR Index (5-year Impact) by Subject area only. The average of all subcategories will be used.

Step 4: Using the ranking percentage category given below, determine the average rank from the JCR and SJR assessments.

                A* = 5%

                A = 6-15%

                B = 16%-50%

                C= >50%

Step 5: Compare the average ranking calculated from Step 4 with the current ranking in USP2015.

  • If the average ranking is higher than that of USP2015, the ranking will be amended in USP2015 to display the
    highest rank.
  • If the average ranking is equal to that of USP2015, there will be no amendments to the ranking in USP2015
  • If the average ranking is lower than that of USP2015, there will be no amendments in the ranking in USP2015, that is, the highest rank will remain.

Please use the template to make submission and forward your submissions for review of ranking to the Research Office (Project Officer- Fulori Nainoca-Waqairagata, fulori.nainoca@usp.ac.fj), with justification using the method mentioned above.

Example of New Classification:  Journal – IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics

Step 1: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics is listed under USP2015 and is ranked B.

Step 2: Search and investigate rankings in SJR index. IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics is found in two subject areas in SJR; Computer Science and Engineering

                Computer Science – 27/1445 = 1.87%

                Engineering – 23/2429= 0.95%

                Average = [1.87% + 0.95%]/2

                Average rank = 1.41% = A*

Step 3:  Search and investigate rankings in JCR index. IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics is found in three categories in JCR; Automation & Control Systems; Engineering, Electrical & Electronic; and Instruments and Instrumentation

                Automation & Control Systems – 2/59 = 3.4%

                Engineering, Electrical & Electronic – 5/248 = 2.02%

                Instruments and Instrumentation – 1/57 = 1.8%

                Average = [3.4%+2.02%+1.8%]/3

                Average rank = 2.41% = A*

In this example, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ranks A* in both SJR and JCR.

               USP2015 – B

               SJR – A*

               JCR – A*

Since the revised rank is higher than that found in USP2015 (B), the revised rank of A* will therefore, be considered and amended on USP2015.
