The Deputy Head of School SPACE Dr. Rosiana Lagi, met interested school teachers, prospective students virtually at Savusavu Centre on the 9th of December 2021 to discuss the new proposed Education programmes cohort. Dr. Lagi presented virtually to available schools in Cakaudrove and Labasa/Savusavu Campus staff to observe and be able to connect with schools later and market the education cohorts given the current circumstances. The cohorts will run outside the semester courses. This has come about after continued discussions with the Education Dept. and in consultation with MEHA (Ministry of Education, Arts & Heritage) on the sudden demand of teachers to upskill.
The education cohorts is created to allow teachers to fast track by taking advantage of the flexi, winter, and 2 weeks school breaks to accumulate courses towards graduation. Discussions are underway for any classes taken during the break are to be used as Professional Development for the teachers. This cohort class means that groups of education students will have the chance to work closely with an assigned lecturer from the School of Education for the specified time.
The 2-week break classes will allow teachers to do face to face while the other component is online and they are able to do that while working. . The core education courses can be pursued during the semester as a cohort and the disciplines can be taken during the semester 1 and 2 for ECE, Primary Ed., Secondary Ed., Special, and Inclusive Ed. It was a success and already we are receiving applications from students for the cohorts later. Also discussed were cohorts for the Master’s thesis, SRP and DRP where prospective students will meet with Dr. Lagi later in Jan 5, 2022 for assistance on how to write course intent and proposals. These opportunities with the Deputy Head of School, SPACE certainly will draw interest and elevate USP Savusavu and Labasa Campus viability to offer research, cohort programmes and be students choice for higher education here in Vanua Levu.
