Research skills

Focusing on student success, the Library offers a range of information research skills (IRS) programmes that incorporates the Research Skills Development Framework. You are encouraged to participate in the level/programme that meets your needs.

All IRS training for Laucala students and those in the region (on arrangement) will be offered from the IRS Training Lab located in the Library Learning Commons on Level A.

Students also have access to online resources including library subject guides. A basic level guide on information research skills is also included at http://usp.ac.fj.libguides.com/irs

Undergraduates:

UU100 is a University course that is completed by all undergraduate students. Component UU100B introduces students to the lifelong skills of being information literate – being able, in this world of information overload, to locate the best information available on a topic in a streamlined way.

For students studying in 200 and 300 level programmes, the Library invites academics to work with their Liaison Librarian (LL) https://www.usp.ac.fj/index.php?id=lib_liaison to identify and offer information research skills sessions tailored to courses and programmes. There are also walk in sessions which are advertised in the library foyer and by tukutuku email announcements. These walk in sessions for undergraduates take place on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 9am and repeated at 3pm. Classes last for one hour

Post-Graduates:

Post-graduate students enrolled from Semester 1, 2018 are required by Senate to complete a mandatory 14.5 hours of Information Research Skills training in their first semester of enrolment. It is necessary to proceed into semester two of study programmes.

From 11 February 2019, the IRS programme for PG students is offered ONLINE via Moodle. Login to MOODLE via https://elearn.usp.ac.fj/login/index.php to access the modules or email irslibrary(at)usp.ac.fj to sign up.

Supporting the online programme are face-to-face (F2F) tutorials by professional staff at Alafua, Emalus, Laucala and the Solomon Islands and advertised as offered. Keep a look out on the all-staff all-student email for weekday, evening and Saturday (booking and walk-in) sessions.

On completion of the Programme, an IRS Completion certificate and a MOODLE badge are issued online.

All PG students enrolled prior to Semester 1, 2018 are strongly encouraged to complete the Programme.

USP Campus and Centre Libraries in the Region:

Campus Libraries without professional Library staff may receive tutorials from Laucala on request using Zoom technology. Campus Directors, academics and PG students should contact the IRS Coordinator, Ms. Vasiti Chambers vasiti.chambers(at)usp.ac.fj; (679) 3232287 to arrange sessions.
